Project Green Light
Road transportation is a major source of global and urban greenhouse gas emissions, especially at city intersections where pollution can be 29 times higher than on open roads. Half of these emissions come from vehicles accelerating after stopping. While some stop-and-go traffic is unavoidable, it can be reduced by optimizing traffic light timing. However, current solutions like expensive hardware or manual vehicle counts are limited and costly.
Project Green Light uses AI and Google Maps driving trends to model traffic patterns and provide intelligent recommendations for optimizing traffic flow. Early results show it could reduce stops by up to 30% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 10%. By optimizing traffic lights and coordinating intersections, Green Light helps reduce stop-and-go driving. The system is now active in over 70 intersections across 13 cities and 4 continents, saving fuel and reducing emissions for up to 30 million car rides monthly.
